Jay, work with the water! You have to run the lower slate beneath the "flare" and there will be a step flashing beneath it too. You will need to remove the siding to get them behind it.
Above the "flare" the step flashings will continue, and the first one will kick the water out onto the lower slates already installed. good luck.

Iím going to slate a small porch roof. The adjacent wall has a flare that juts out onto the roof. How should I handle that area? I havenít stripped the roof yet, so Iím not sure if the first course of shingles goes underneath the flare or if the starter and first course shingles are just cut to fit a small space.
