Subject says it all. Planning to install salvaged weathering green standard thickness slate on 7:12 roof. Don't know how old slate is and wondering if slate would outlast galvanized nails. Installing about 25 squares so overall nail cost is low (perhaps 50 lbs. needed). Copper is too expensive. Stainless is almost half the price but is it overkill? If galvanized is the answer, what's a good hot-dipped brand? Thanks... |

Hot-dipped galv. nails are not easy to find these days. We get ours through a local hardware store, special order. I may add them to our online store this year if I can find a decent supplier. Our copper nail supplier does not carry them. Joe |

From your reply, sounds like you're recommending hot-dipped galvanized over stainless steel for this type of slate. Do you remember what the price was for 50lbs of hot-dipped 1-1/2 inchers? You're right, all the 50lb boxes of roofing nails I see are EG. |

Hot dipped galvanized nails are alright! They are alot better than "plain" galvanized nails but, if it were me (and this is my opinion) I would use either copper or stainless steel, for any and all slate roofing and for any tile roofing to! Galvanized nails are alot cheaper than stainless or copper nails though. |

Copper prices are crazy so looks like it will be stainless steel. BTW, galvanized nail manufacture Maze recommends against using a serrated (sp?) hammer face on their galv nails. Says it breaks off the zinc on the nail head. A little more galv nail uncertainty. I'll go with stainless steel. Thanks.... |
