I bought a Zircon i65 stud finder to see if it could find the rafters beneath the slates on my roof. But it doesn't seem to work too well, in either regular or high sensitivity mode.

My roof has 1" thick laths over the rafters, and the usual 3/16" thick slates, so with the double lapping, the rafters are probably at or a little beyond the advertised maximum depth of 1 1/2" below the surface.

Has anyone found a tool that works for this purpose?
