Just removed slate from one side of our farmhouse. Basically the slate was so bad (ribbon slate) that the slate could just be pushed off or lifted up without effort.Huge holes were worn through where all the nails had been and the slates were breaking off diagonally at the "ribbon". What we plan to do is resheath the roof after fixing some uneven rafters (taking more time) and run the felt over. It looks like we possibly won't get to re-slating before spring. Will it be necessary to put copper sheeting in the valley(s) if we are not ready to slate until then or is the felting enough for winter weather needs? |

Half lap 30 lb. felt and then skim over the nail heads with roof cement. That should get you through the winter providing you are not in a high wind area. Nail battens on the roof vertically to prevent wind uplift on the felt (don't nail them horizontally or you will dam water, ice and snow on the roof and create leakage). Make sure you place an extra layer of felt up the valleys before going over the valleys with the half-lap. And wait until the final roof is on before you paint or plaster ;-). |
