Could be capillary attraction drawing the water up underneath the bottom edge of the valley, which is likely if there is ice build-up there. This can be alleviated by notching the bottom edge of the valley and bending about an inch of it at a right angle to create a drip edge at the bottom of the valley. this will usually block capillary attraction. | ||

I've got an old house with poor insulation, which results in icicles and ice dams in the valleys. Last weekend I noticed (in one valley on the south side) icicles are forming from water that appears to be coming out UNDER the flashing. The small triangular area between flashing and roof is solid ice. This is good quality copper flashing installed by Barry Smith about 7 years ago, and I have every confidence in his work. Is this indicative of a roof problem that needs attention? |
