Sorry to revive a nearly year old thread but I wanted to answer the question of where the 1905 accident occurred. It happened at our Briar Hill quarry. Apparently the workers had undermined a roughly 4,000 ton stone(approx. 60x30x20 ft) when it collapsed on them. To date there have been no significant artifacts pulled from the spot where they were buried. |

Not sure, Liam. The one in the middle is the Evans quarry, I think that was near or North of Granville, I will check.. The other two people shots, I am not sure of either, I will do some checking with the museum folks. These and other great photos are at this site here>> http://www.slatevalleymuseum.org/photos.htm |

OK, so I am an IDIOT ... thank God I was wrong! I called my buddy up at Hilltop and really freaked him out! Joe, if you want to just *ahem* make my comments magically go away, I'd be indebted! |

Hello Liam, I am not absolutelly sure which one caved in in the 1905 incident, there were about 3 pits that I know of here right close to the village of Pawlet. This is a historic picture from the Slate Valley Museum Collection. This photo looks like the pit on the East side of the road just North of the Village which was abandoned after filling up with water. We used to swim here and dive off the cliffs in the 80's. I bet the Museum people would know the answer as to which one caved in back then. Here is a link the The Museum's photo collection, there are some very nice ones of the real people doing the real work - getting this stuff out of the ground. http://www.slatevalleymuseum.org/photos.htm By the way--I have seen some pictures of your work, very inspiring stuff. I hope to be that good someday. |

You just scared the hell out of me until I realized that this is an old archive article. My house is right down the road from Pawlet and I know people that work in a Pawlet Quarry. The Slate Valley Museum in Granville has some excellent exhibits, photos, and videos that show conditions in the quarrys from the old days. The Museum is having an interesting tour and presentation this Friday that is worth the ride..... MODERN QUARRY TOUR, FRIDAY, OCTOBER 10, 9 AM-NOON, $10 ¨Dan Boone, Owner/Operator Northeast Slate Company leads HEAVY LIFTING at Hilltop Quarry begins at museum then car caravan to quarry includes tour of HEAVY LIFTING exhibit http://www.slatevalleymuseum.org/ |

From NY Times ... 06-Oct-08: "Eight men were killed and several were injured to-day in a cave-in of the Vermont Slate Company's quarry in the town of Pawlet, four miles from Granville. Hundreds of tons of waste, together with great sections of slate, slid with a rumbling noise down upon the gang of men at work in the pit..." http://query.nytimes.com/mem/archive-free/pdf?res=9402E7D6103AE733A25754C0A9669D 946497D6CF |
