We have a contract to buy a home in Bangor, PA with a slate roof. Unfortunately, the slate roofer said the roof must be replaced because the shingles are coming off where they are attached, and it is not economical to repair. The home is estimated to have been built around 1900. The slate is rectangular black. Is there any market for this slate if it is not flaking? |

Straw house sounds cool . I live in the Boston area of MA . Dose that area of N. CA have Harsh winters , if so I would sugest using a much steeper roof and possably a copper panel ice belt to shed the snow load off that already heavy slate roof. I just started visiting this site and would also like to see some photos of this job . If you could some how post them ? That would be great. Thank You Much J.M.P. You can also e-mail me at pedroandsons@comcast.net |

We are a Mortuary/Cemetery combo in Salina, Kansas. A couple of years ago we had all of our roofs re-done. When the contractors removed the old slate we had a large amount of re-usable slate left over. We threw away all the damaged or cracked slate and put the rest on pallets. We want to get rid of these. What can we do? Diana Frobenius dfro@cox.net WWW.roselawnsalina.com Salina, Ks. |

WE OWN A 6000-9000 SQ FOOT SLATE ROOF CIRCA 1924. THE SLATE IS MULTI COLORED--TORQUOISE, BRICK RED, GREY, BROWNISH. SLATE CAME FROM VERMONT OR NEWW HAMPSHIRE. SIZE--APPROX 12" X 9", SQUARE CORNERS. OUR PROBLEM: WE CAN NOT FIND A SLATE ROOF REPAIRER! WE WOULD CONSIDER SELLING THIS HISTORICAL SLATE, COMPENSATION TO INCLUDE A NEW SHINGLED ROOF, ETC. DO YOU KNOW SLATE ROOFERS IN THE LOUISIANA AREA? OR PERSONS INTERESTED IN ROOFING NEW HOMES WITH BEAUTIFUL MULTICOLORED SLATE? THANKS CINDYLANEG@AOL.COM |

Sounds like you need a restoration contractor, not a salvager. |

If the slate is truly 12" x 9", I doubt that you will get many "takers" as this is not a very "saleable" size. Perhaps you are just guessing on the dimensions? (since you said "approx"). 14", 16" or 18" tall would be more attractive to a salvager or reseller. There are most definitely Slate Roofers in the Louisiana area: Dewey Boudreau Roof Doctor 550 Lee Drive Apt. #122 Baton Rouge, LA 70808 504-769-5785 Orleans Sheet Metal Works & Roofing, Inc. 2630 Orleans Ave New Orleans, LA 70119 504-822-4895 504-822-4892 Allstate Builders 727 Aurora Ave. Metairie, LA 70005 504-834-8350 Those contacts do not represent an endorsement. Hirer Beware. You are responsible for assessing competence and credibility. Hope this helps, SlateGuy |

I am on the Myer's Memorial Library Board in Frewsburg, New York (south of Buffalo NY near the Pennsylvania border) that is considering replacing a slate roof that is approximately 75 years old. The past several years we have seen increased snow and ice damage to the first several courses and other various areas. Part of our evaluation is to see if there is salvage value for this roof. Would you be able to recommend companies in the vicinity of western New York State that are qualified to assess it's value? If so, thank you. Paul Bell |

There are several persons who could assess the value of the roof. Contact Clay Heald (VTEagle21@aol.com) as I know he has just been in that area assessing slate roofs for salvage value. |

We are building a straw bale house in Mendocino, California, and are interested in a slate roof. The house will be 39'x22' and the roof two feet larger in all directions to protect the bales. The roof is a simple gable roof, and the pitch can be set at whatever is best for the slate. Are there any slate roofers in Northern California, or does anyone have any advice for us on cost or construction? Thank you. |

Have you considered doing it yourself? Get a copy of the slate roof bible (should be a link at left). |

Building a straw bale house sounds pretty cool, could you post some photos of the process for all of us to enjoy. After all this is a 'NATUAL' slate roofing site and your building a natual material home. Good luck and if I may ask this question why? did you choose to build a straw bale house? Cheaper?, more efficiant? Thanks for any imput. Also I would go with atleast a 5/12 pitched roof. Use American slate (we prefer Vermont slate) it's the best. Nails copper or stainless steel are both good choices. Flashings also copper or terne coated stainless steel. As for slate I like the thinner slate say, 3/16ths and we like 20" or 18" X 10" slate. Vermont slate comes in a variety of colors and sizes. But, as Joe suggested (even if you are going to contract out the work) do yourself a favor and purchase the slate roof bible. You will then become a educated slate roof person with the ability to know right from wrong about slate roofs. After all you can buy the best material(s) but, if the roofer isn't too good it won't mean much. Good luck and post any further questions you have and some photos too! |
