This class will provide a basic introduction to the use of slate as a roofing material. Students will visit a slate quarry for a first-hand look at how slate is removed from the ground, split and trimmed to size. Students will then discuss slate roof design, prepare the slate for application, and ultimately install it on a structure utilizing best trade practices. All students will be provided with hands-on opportunities, including spliting the slate, trimming, punching nail holes, and installation of these pieces on an actual roof. During the course students will learn to distinguish between many of the correct and incorrect installation techniques used in the slate roof industry. This course is perfect for any builder, architect, designer, or consulting firm interested in educating themselves or their employees of the correct installation of a traditional slate roof in their designs. All participants will be provided with a copy of the Slate Roof Bible, by Joe Jenkins, who will also be a guest instructor in the class. Competency Level: All Levels Start Date: September 12, 2010 Duration: 5 Days Instructors: Liam Tower and Jamie Duggan (Joe will be there for a day or two.)
