But there are no slates to the right of the skylight on the left side.

Seems so, but there are a lot of different sizes mixed. Most of them are very small slates (perhaps 10x20 cm). Also in some parts they are forming a pile. These piles are also in the upper parts of the roof, so it can't be formed by sliding.

It looks like they are just sliding off the roof!

I took this picture on saturday in France, close to the Slate Museum of Rimognes. I can not understand the type of work developed here, I think this is a a severe cause of roofer madness. Or perphaps this has some reason, what do you think?
