I see that fairly frequently on old roofs here, strip of slate used in lieu of a wood cant strip. Usually the starter looks like your photo, too, but sometimes they flip it over like they should.

No boots yet, but several road signs were used as really large bib flashings in one slate roof we repaired.

Yes the slate. I have found a VT license plate as flashing on a slate roof!

Well I have done this, as my cant strip. I held back the first course flush to the drip or eave board. Then the second course would be upside down as we typically do!

We could start with the boot dave found tarred in a valley.
Yes a boot, not a plumbing boot, a boot that goes on your foot.
We cant figure out why, we guess that after someone tarred the valley, they either needed something to fill a hole with and the tar couldn't stretch over the hole so they had someone throw up a boot from the truck, or the tar guy stepped in the freshly tarred valley by mistake and it was easier to just unlace his boot and leave it there than to try and clean it up and deal with coming down the ladder with a bucket in one hand and a boot in the other!!!!!!
