Sue,

You better check his references and get other bids. His price is way too LOW. Assuming you are in Pittsburgh (a major metropolitan area) in Pennsylvania (not the least affluent of states, by far) the price should be much higher.

$1200 to $1600 is more on the mark.

Did you get competing bids?

Chris, I went out and looked at the roof to jog my memory. There are some tiles on the edge that are twisted so that a corner is actually sticking out over the edge of the roof. They need fixed and he used a word not familiar to me, but I took it to mean straighten somehow.
Does that help?

What Chris said! Since he has already been out once, he has about 2-3 hours into it already. He will have to get the slates and come out and do the repairs too, and total time is going to be anywhere form another 3 to 4 hours by the time he travels. 5 to 7 hours of his time with overhead and insurance for $425.00 is cheap in the long run, if he does what he should. IF he is not a "specialist", he could do more damage to the roof than that in half the time.

Keep us informed.

the price isn't the important thing.

{The slate specialist }
Your 4th sentence is the important thing.
Check references, make sure he is the slate specialist.
If he is, you will be happy.
If not, you will be sad.

did he explain how he was to "repair" the six slates?
if you could elaborate more, even if by memory, we could help out more. let us know, sue.

I just got a bid on my slate roof in Western PA. My home was built in 1943. The color is grey. The slate specialist came and looked by eye and bid $425.00 for repairing 6 and replacing 12 tiles. He seems legit with his license and insurance. This could change if he finds more things wrong once he is actually up on the roof. Is this a good bid?
