Steve - the flakiness on the under side of the slate is common on barns, especially when the roof is made of lath or battens and air and moisture can get to the back side of the slate. You don't need to scrape it off and it won't hurt anything. The slate is still good if you can scrape off the flakes and there is solid slate underneath. I would use the heavier slates rather than the lighter ones if that is an option. You can mix up sizes to get a unique roof. I wrote an article or two about this in Traditional Roofing. You will probably want to keep the lengths within a maximum 4" range. For example, you can use 18", 20" and 22" long slates. Here's an article: http://www.traditionalroofing.com/TR5_cottage_roofs.html A shorter length range ( such as 1") will yield a more subtle look. Here's another article: http://www.traditionalroofing.com/TR3-staggered-butt.html |

Thank you Joe for the response. Is it better to use the heaviest? also is it recomended to scrape off the loose stuff on the bottom. Also if it is loose on the bottom but the tops are hard and it is a good weight slate is it OK to use it? I have way more than I need but want to use the best ones. I also have many sizes, I have about 1500 slates that are small, 8 by 16 inch, I have lots of good ones that are 9 by 18 on the church, I will find out for sure how good when I remove them, and I have about 2,000 12 by 24 and 5,000 plus 12 by 18. Some are with the corners cut and some are square. I would like advise on if I should just mix it up, or create a pattern, and is it a good idea to use many sizes together? Sorry for all the questions but I want to do it the right way. |

Steve - looks like VT sea green slate. You should be able to tell by the feel and weight of the slates if you have a bad one or not. Make sure there are no holes in the face. If the slates are generally sound, they should make a good roof. |

I am restoring an 1885 church and making it in to a home. I removed slate from 2 barns. one is a 12 by 24 inch slate and the other is a 12 by 18 inch slate. many ring like new but some have soft bottoms. the top side is very nhard and the punch hole test where the slate sheds away for the nail to resess checks out fine on all the slates. I believe they are very good but would like advise on how to determine which slates to use and whether to scrape the slate before applying it or just put it up like it is. How much soft stuff on the bottom is acceptable? The slates are grey with a purple tint and a purple or redish brown. The top is very hard. some photos of them are at www.dazzlingmills.com/michelle |

Rounded bottom lip and rough texture, but not scratch-faced. If I can find the exact match but only in a lower quanity (only 1 or 2 squares) I would still be interested to blend in with what I have. I am looking for 1/2-square of Miffland Hood (Dresden) clay roof tile, more or less smooth on the back side and with what looks like a wire brush finish on the front. It measures about 8" wide and should be at least 12" to 14" long. - There is an interlock along the sides for adjacent tiles. I need at least 1/2-square for now, possibly no more than that. - I will need this real soon, so let me know right away. - It won't matter if what you know of may be salvaged clay tile, as long as they are intact and unfractured. - The color is brown. Thanks. - Tom Bridges |

Vintage Terra Cotta Roofing Tiles We have for sale a rather large lot of vintage terra cotta roofing tiles. There are approx. 1200 to possibly 1500 tiles to include full pieces, half pieces (both length & width) and ridge cap pieces. These were removed from our garage after a hurricane dropped a large pecan tree on it! There were not enough to redo the garage so up for sale they go! These would be great for an nice out building, gazebo or restoration job. These would need to be picked up...no shipping. We live in Eastern NC...if interested please contact us at: michaelandjoanne@hotmail.com Thanks! |

10'x10' measured roof area is considered 1sq. of roofing. So if your roof measures 10'x20' you would have 2sq. of needed roofing material. Remember to measure the whole roof, any dormors and etc.. Your Welcome! |
