I have seen slate nailed directly into "nailable concrete" decks. The nails were probably hot-dipped galvanized, but stainless steel roofing nails would work just as well. If you can nail a wooden slat into the concrete, why not nail the slate itself? Alternatively, you could nail furring strips over the concrete, or even 2x4s, and then nail the slate to them. Funny how those tiles disintegrated like that. |

S.A. - 40-50% of the tile is completely disintegrated and the rest is extremely brittle making long term repairs out of the question. Not familier with the strapping technique that you had mentioned to use if replacing using slate.....please elaborate. I would think you would have to attach verticle slats of wood as spacers to the concrete and 1"x2" lath horizontally to those to accept the slate. Does anyone know of any sources as to the proper procedure for allowing this type of deck to accept asphalt or slate? I would much rather install sea green slate to match a buildig adjacent to this one, but they are requiring a quote for asphalt also. |

Why not repair the flat tile? If you go with slate you will need to do the same as the tile with using the strapping. With a nice concrete deck it would be to bad to see asphalt on it, if you when that way I would say you would need to plywood the deck. |

They are fastened using two roofing nails at the top of each piece (over thin lath). The lath strips are nailed directly into concrete deck. Also, they appear to be layed in with mortar. You can see in the close-up shot. Put this in your address bar and you should be able to see pictures: http://s290.photobucket.com/albums/ll273/Jeff452/?mediafilter=images |

Looking for input/comments on changing existing tile roof to traditional slate or asphalt shingles. Existing building has steel framing and concrete roof deck. http://s290.photobucket.com/albums/ll273/Jeff452/?mediafilter=images |
