Normally they will install a metal flashing beneath them so the water can't get in. This can be individual pieces beneath each slate or a long piece that caps the top. On the other hand, they would just install some plastic cement between them. You could do that too.

The peak of my roof is finished with rectangular tiles lapped on each side of the ridge. This leaves a gap at the peak for water to enter. I'm not sure how this has not leaked for 50 years, but now it does. How can I repair this? Thanks
