Above: Install
furring strips along hip before slating roof. Follow chalk lines. These
are 3/4 inch furring strips being used for standard
thickness (3/16 inch to 1/4 inch) slates. Furring
strips were nailed to roof with 2.5 inch hot dipped
galvanized common nails. The wood strips should be
approximately 3 times the thickness of the slates.
Above: Install the next
piece of step flashing over the pair of hip slates. A single nail on either side
is sufficient.
Above: Install the next
pair of hip slates over step flashing. At least two
nails per slate is required. Three is better. If you're
going to nail through the lower slate, drill first with
a 3/16 inch masonry bit and use a 2.5 inch copper
roofing nail.
Above: This flashing
is 10 inches long x 8 inches wide on 8 x16 hip
slates.
Above: The flashing
is folded lengthwise in half (4 inches each side). The
16 inch long hip slates are overlapped 8 inches (halfway)
by both the overlying slates and the flashings. The
10 inch step flashings then overlap each other by 2 inches.
Above: Continue up
the hip in this manner, flashing over the top of each
pair of hip slates. Install the slates in pairs, not
one side at a time. The hip slates do not need to be
tapered and most can be installed without cutting. You can cut the exposed corner for a decorative effect, however.
The finished hip
is leakproof and permanent.
HIP
AND RIDGE JOINT
A ridge is
coming to a hip. Install copper at joint over valley.
Install another
pair of ridge slates cut to fit over the valley center. Install
next step flashing over these slates. Install loose
(not nailed) strap hanger over this copper step flashing.
Lay pair of
short ridge slates over strap hanger on bed of adhesive.
In this case, "lifetime" caulk.
Bottom edge of strap folds up to hold pair of slates
in place while adhesive sets up.
Proceed up
hip with first pair of hip slates cut at an angle to
fit against ridge slates. Install step flashing under
each pair of hip and ridge slates. All ridge slates
should be caulked at joint. Hip slates do not need
caulked at joint.
VENTILATED
SLATE RIDGES
Again, install
furring strips on both sides of ridge opening before
slating roof.
Roll a low-profile
plastic ridge vent material (Owens Corning VentSure
shown above) over the furring strips.
Nail the vent
material to the furring strips. Install ridge slates
and flashings in the same manner as installing slate
hips, except ridge joints should be caulked. You will
need longer nails when installing ridge slates over
vent material. In this case, 2.5 inch copper
roofing nails were used.
