Just forget the Ice and Water or the underlayment ideas for leak prevention. Proceed with a roof that does not allow precipitation below the primary water shedding material. Fog or dew with warm air falling on cooler roof may be an issue but natural drying takes care of that. If you have an unhealthy home where the attic is stagnant or you have bypasses that allow air from the conditioned space, invest in some quality insulation and air sealing. If you live north of the Mason-Dixon install a vapor retarder (or paint it on) on the living side of the ceilings. Seal the trim and penetrations of the ceiling and high hat lights, If you still have concern for ice dams, install a metal roof along the eave and up at least two foot over the warm side of eave walls. Get off the underlayment craze. Building officials will mandate it but they only know what they are told. Yes the ice and water stops the natural breathability of the slate roof. |

I'm a homeowner in NY moving forward with a slate roof replacment project on my 75 year old home. I've heard that installing a I/W shield on my tonge and groove deck is not a good idea due to ventilation/breathability concerns. All things considered can I get your expert opinions on this topic?
