The slate is PA and look like most will fall apart as you remove it. If you removel to renailing you most likely will need to buy more slate to mix in with what you take off 50 to 100% of the slate. Most of use here would most likely would suggest removel and installation of new or used slate, knowing that its PA slate. As far as cost of the installation and it being cheaper will depend on the installer. I sure most company will try to get you to install a different roof. |

Here is a few pics of the FRONT roof where the nails are failing, and some tiles are going bad from age. |

It may be the way to go, but first you should post a few pictures of both front and back. Depending on the slate you may not want to install it again. Do you know the color or what kind it is, what about the feathers of the slate, faky or is there sparkales in it, is there a green tint? All of this will be a facter on weather to insatll the same slate again. |

I have a 1920's Sears kit home. It's a cape cod with a slate roof. The roof on the back of the house is in solid condition...no problems. Maybe because it never gets sun. The roof on the front is in need of constant maintenance. I've learned how to use copper nails to keep slipping tiles in place, but I'm losing the battle. I had a leak this spring and pushed some tiles back into place and I'm hoping that works. My question: I'd like to keep the roof because it looks great, but it's clear the nails are failing. Would it make sense to hire someone to take off the tiles on the front of the house, and renail them? Would this be a lot cheaper if I can re-use most of the tiles (say 80%)? Any advice is appreciated. |
