Thank you Old_School. You hit the copper nail on the head -- when rakes started following their own random directions, valleys started leaking and the insisted solution was a little roof patching cement, and other subs started reporting aberrant, dangerous behavior, I realized we were heading for disaster. Intervention came early enough in the work (just not the $), but at least we can move on with relatively little redo work. South of Montreal, West of Portland ME, East of Buffalo NY or Pittsburgh PA, and North of Richmond VA? Then you are within a day's drive of the site. Best, Mark |

Mark, that is a long way from me here in the midwest, but I am sure that you have come to the right place for help. I am starting to recover a "funble" here in Kalamazoo on another slate roof. The previous "slater" charged the guy a fortune and we have to take everything he did apart and re-do it. At least you stopped the roofer before he did much harm to your roofs. Good luck! |

Slate_Man, To be fair, it wd be better to reply to some of your questions directly. I don't want to use a public forum to rail against other's ethics, practices and problems. Two structures: House roof is double-hip with three intersecting gables. Detached garage roof is four intersecting gables with an extension on one end. Plans and pics are avail. Foundation/underlayment work is mostly complete, and slating has been started. Almost all flashing still to be done. Jobsite is within Sussex NJ, Milford PA & Monticello NY triangle. Hope this information is helpful, Mark |

What is the problem with the other roofer? How much is left? What the house look like? What town is it in? |

It's a long story, but we're stuck about a third of the way through a 60sq job in lower New York State. Stuck, because we had to ask our previous slater to leave. If you are fair and looking for a detailed but straightforward project now; you want to work with reasonable clients who truly appreciate craftsmanship -- and you take pride in that craftsmanship; you will agree not to drink or do other bad things while on our roof; and you want to be put up locally in a great resort 10 mins away from the jobsite, then please reply to us backchannel 973-379-5654. Appreciate references, and we will supply the same for you. The job is available immediately for a small crew of two or three. Thank you, Mark |
