Thanks Kurtis and Slate Affair. I like the corner of the hammer head technique. Thanks for the tip on the location of starter slate holes. I've posted another picture with improved location. The underlayment is 30lb felt. The light was bad in that first picture. Yes the slate is North Country Unfading Black. I got rustic as the price was a little better and I like the look. I got an equal number of 16X8s, 10s and 12s. Is there any rule for mixing other than to use an equal number and maintain 3 inch sidelap? Does it matter if you use 2 of the same width sometimes?

Sometimes I use a punch on really springy old decking when I'm making repairs. Usually you can make the last few taps on the nail with the corner of the hammer head. Don't over-do it though. The slates should still be a little lose. They just hang on the nails. |

Mark what a great thing to get to do, nice. On the picture you post of the slate your start corse has a nail that looks to be in the middle, you need to punch your starter slates more in the upper corners away from the center of the slate. As far as the nails you will tap the slate every so often as you hammer in the nail, I have never need to use a punch to sink the nails. Is that North Country Black? And are you using underlayment of any kind or just a rosin paper(pink paper). |

I am slating my garage and have never done any slate work before. All my knowledge is based on the slate roof bible and this message board. I am very excited about this project and would like to post my progress on this board if that's OK? As I started nailing my slate, I was unsure about countersinking the nails. I understand that I don't want a nail head sticking up as it will eventually wear a hole in the slate above it, but as I get the nail head even with the top of the slate, I am worried about breaking the slate. I feel like using a punch, but I have not read about anybody doing that. Thanks in advance for your help. |
