If anyone out there has some details on the construction of a slate roof nailed to lath with the joints mortared in, it would be greatly appreciated. Our clients would like to put a slate roof on their pool house. They happened to have seen this construction on a structure in the South of France and like the look of it. The use of mortar on slate roofs is common in Europe where ceramic tile is commonly used and often bedded in mortar, but it is almost unheard of in the U.S. There is no reason to mortar any joints on a slate roof if the slates are nailed to the lath and the roof has sufficient slope. However, a fully decked roof (as opposed to lath) is a better approach for constructing a slate roof - it's stronger, better insulated and easier to repair a century later. On the outside, you only see the slates, so I'm not sure what you mean by "they like the look of it." If they like the look of the lath inside, install a lath roof, but leave the mortar out.
