Did anyone read in Slate Roof Quarterly the article about slating a roof from the top down using just hooks?Has anyone ever done this method of install?I've never even considered doing it and not sure if I ever would.

I don't think it was helpful information. It's the sort of information that makes us experienced slaters scratch our heads and say, "What the hell is he talking about!?" But people who have no experience installing slate now think that slate can or even should be installed from the top down. A well-established traditional slater would never publish information like that. It's unfortunate that such information is put into print. I don't think it helps the American slate industry at all. When bad information is put into print and published, it sometimes takes years, decades, or even generations to eradicate from the public mind. I have been seeing bizarre installation techniques being used lately on new slate roof installations (such as hanging all valley slates on wires instead of nailing them), and I can trace these techniques back to recently published materials that advocate such techniques - materials that are published by people who have no business trying to tell anyone how to install slate roofs. It annoys me.
