my 70 yo buckingham slate roof on rock-hard old-growth pine sheathing had tree limb damage to about 150 slates, scattered here and there. Original nails were copper. The repairers did not use hooks but non-stainless, ordinary non-galvanized iron nails hidden with black vinyl (paint?) coated bibs. what do you think? Also, the new slates of course don't perfectly match - do you have a favorite "aging' treatment(ph modifier or other) to make them look a little dirty/darker/tiny bit greenish/mossy? thanks, harvey | ||

The repair work sounds like it was performed in a less than professional manner. We try to have aged replacement slates on hand to do repairs with,so that it isn't as obvious where repairs have been done.I have never tried to "age" slates to make them more close to the patina of the existing roof. |
