I have discussed replacing my 90 year old copper valleys with a contractor. We agreed on a price and the materials used-removing slate on the sides of the valley and then installing the 16 oz. copper valleys in the conventional way.
He then came back to me and asked if I wanted to have the valleys installed differently it would save him time and me money.
The difference is he only removes the slate at the top of the exsisting valleys and slides the replacement valleys over the old valleys in 5 foot sections.
I have some short valleys that run about 6 feet each and I also have 2 long valleys that are about 20 feet long.
Is this a tryed proven repair installation method or a short cut that is not worth considering???

You can not get proper installation in that manner.Friction and uneveness will make that type of installation almost impossible. They would have to compromise how much copper would be underneath the slate when finished.
This is a shortcut not worth considering in my estimation.
20 oz. copper will last longer and be more economical over it's life span.

Walter is right. The "short-cut" valley replacement is better referred to as "half-assed." You have to remove and then re-install the slates on either side of the valley in order for the valley metal to extend the proper distance under the slate (5" mimimum).

Are you sure you want to let this guy repair your valleys? I would question his competence for even considering this method...
